The desire to never be born.

Last updated: April 21, 2025

The desire to never be born, also known as "Antinatalism" is an interesting and deep topic. I myself have struggled with this from time to time, I would constantly think that if I had never been born I wouldn't have to suffer in a world I didn't ask to be placed into.

I've always wondered what it would be like to just not exist, to exist without existing, to be able to see peoples stories without having a place in the world, to watch peoples life unfold, see their actions, see them handle situations; without having to deal with the pain of existing, having emotions, dealing with situations.

Antinatalism is not the same as being suicidal, most people that have the desire to have never been born don't want to kill themselves, they simply wish to have never been born, to not be placed in this world.

The reason I have this thought is because of my insignificance in this ever expanding universe, why be born into a world where in the end, nothing I do matters? I could grow old and solve world hunger yet in a couple hundred years or less it wouldn't matter, my feat would simply be overlooked for the newest feat of the century. Being born into a world where you are destined to die and have no true impact on simply doesn't make sense to me. Why would I want to be born into a world where I am insignificant, where nothing I could possibly do would leave a significant mark in the universe.

A video I really like that delves into this topic is by Clark Elieson, The Desire to Have Never Been Born
